So many things in our lives are unknown and uncertain. There’s not much opportunity to grab onto anything solid, although we often try. We grab onto busyness, social media, withdrawing, engaging in unhealthy habits - even overdoing yoga!
The idea of embracing the uncertainty of life is not exactly well liked. I can definitely see why! Yet, the truth is moving towards the unknown - far out of comfort zone, and into uncertainty is most often where true possibility and the freedom to live spontaneously exists. Pema Chodron says, “The closer we are to the truth, the more fear we have.” Wow! That rings true, but unexpected.
I have always thought that coming close to the truth might mean relaxation and ease. Rather, it’s often extremely uncomfortable and causes quite a bit of “ugh”. So, I guess the question is, are we willing to take the leap and trust during these times of uncertainty and fear?
Are we willing to jump into this vastness of not knowing? Or do we want to hold on by always “knowing”? Are we really ready to do things differently than how we’ve usually done them? And, are we willing to do this again and again? Are we really willing to practice our yoga all day long? Or, is our yoga only on our mat when we do our asana?
To me, trusting the process on the spiritual, yoga path is so important and requires a good dose of resilience. Being resilient enough to handle the leap, handle the bumps along the way, and ultimately, handle the disappointments. At the same time, being ready to handle the success, the truth and real experience of seeing things as they are! A resilient and adult attitude is needed for both situations. The ones that work out how we want, and the ones that we think have missed the mark.
