Remembering back when I first started taking yoga classes, I remember chanting in class and wondering what was going on? What was I saying? What did it mean? Was this a cult? Looking back on that so many years later, it makes me laugh but it does remind how important maintaining our beginner’s mind is.
Now, I love chanting, mantras and singing and it feels natural and part of my practice, but this isn’t the case for many who are just being introduced to yoga and its many practices. Chanting and saying mantras can be weird, and scary enough to scare people away from yoga. It’s a good reminder for us all, as teachers and educators, to make the practice accessible and available to people who are new and beginners. Remembering to embody our beginner’s mind and teach from where they are, instead of where we are, or even where we’d like them to be. Chanting when explained well and taught with sensitivity can be an enjoyable and fun experience for new practitioners! Enjoy our video that explains a bit on chanting by one of our wonderful teaching faculty!
